Top 5 UI Design Trends 2023

UI/UX Design Trends 2023

As 2022 comes to a close, we reflect on the trends that have influenced digital products on our devices this year. As we gear up for 2023, we are closely examining the ongoing evolution of UI  trends and their potential to benefit and delight users. In this article, we will discuss some of the trends that we believe will continue to grow and possibly become even more prominent in the coming year.

1. Motion Design

As interface design evolves, motion design is becoming increasingly important. Improvements in animation and video compression, as well as advances in internet, browser, and device capabilities, allow for more complex and sophisticated motion in interfaces without sacrificing performance or efficiency.

With the availability of user-friendly animation programs and animation libraries, designers are more confident in experimenting with motion to enhance the user experience and make it more visually appealing. By simulating the physics and movement of physical objects, designers can create immersive digital interactions.

Looking ahead, motion design will also play a significant role in video content, including curated video clips, dynamic backgrounds, and engaging video popups, all of which contribute to creating compelling brand experiences.

2. Scrollytelling

Scrollytelling, or immersive scrolling, is a subcategory of motion design that is becoming more popular for improving the interaction between users and products. Scroll trigger animation, while not necessarily tied directly to a product's functionality, can add visual appeal and smooth transitions between different pieces of information when executed effectively.

The storytelling aspect of immersive scrolling enables products, especially landing pages, to be more engaging even with limited content and features. Overall, scrollytelling enhances the content, delights users, improves brand perception, and increases desirability.

It is a relatively new form of storytelling that is still evolving through the numerous examples found online. By using scrollytelling, designers can create a more dynamic and visually appealing user experience that engages users and enhances their understanding of the product or service being offered. As the internet and technology continue to advance, we can expect to see more creative and innovative uses of scrollytelling in digital products.

3. New Bolder Minimalism

Minimalism is not exactly breaking new ground, as it continues to emphasize functional objects, negative space, flat design elements and patterns, simple navigation, and limited color schemes. However, the upcoming trend in minimalism is distinguished by a more refined and evolved approach to these core principles.

One key aspect of this evolution is the use of carefully chosen monochromatic palettes, paired with large flat color shapes, padded surfaces, and rounded edges. This creates a clean and uncluttered appearance that still feels luxurious and sophisticated.

Additionally, the use of rounded shapes and soft edges, combined with flat graphics and contrasting font styles, adds a touch of expressiveness to minimalist interfaces without compromising on clarity, readability, or ease of use. In the coming year, we can expect to see minimalist designs that are both personal and expressive, while still maintaining their focus on simplicity and functionality.

4. Happy Colors / Dopamine inducing palettes

The concept of "dopamine dressing," which originated in fashion and is characterized by the use of bold, happy colors, is now influencing interface design. This trend builds on the recent retro resurgence and emphasizes the emotional and symbolic significance of color.

In user interface design, we can expect to see a combination of color blocking, subtle textures, uplifting hues, retro elements, and either brutalist or anti-design layouts, creating a visually striking and impactful experience for users of all ages.

This trend towards using dopamine-boosting colors is so widespread that even major brands, despite generally maintaining a more subdued aesthetic, are incorporating these hues into their digital campaigns as standalone initiatives without overhauling their overall brand identity.

5. Aurora Gradients

Despite some predictions that the gradient trend would fade after the Instagram redesign, it remains a popular choice in interface design.

Gradients, which are achieved by blending colors together, are now taking on a new vibe with the emergence of "aurora gradients," which use light, complementary colors to create a dreamy and modern look that evokes the 1980s and 1990s.

These gradients, named for their similarity to the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, add a touch of mystique, expressiveness, and sophistication to web and app design projects. The gradient trend is not limited to the tech industry, but can be seen across a variety of sectors in branding and web assets. It seems that gradients are here to stay, evolving and adapting to new styles and aesthetics.

Conclusion

UI design trends are constantly changing and evolving, as designers and developers seek to create innovative and engaging user experiences.

In recent years, we have seen the rise of minimalism, with a focus on functional objects, negative space, and limited color schemes. Another trend is the use of "dopamine dressing," which involves incorporating bold, happy colors to evoke positive emotions and create a visually striking experience. Gradients, particularly "aurora gradients" that blend light complementary colors, are also a popular choice for adding depth and expressiveness to interfaces.

As technology and user preferences continue to evolve, we can expect to see new and exciting trends emerge in UI design, shaping the way we interact with digital devices and platforms.
